Marine Construction in Laurel, DE

Broad Creek runs tidal from Laurel down to the Nanticoke, and the town sits between that and Records Pond. Two very different kinds of shoreline within a mile of each other: tidal bank that moves with the current, and pond edge that does not.

The water around Laurel

Tidal river water: Broad Creek, Records Pond and Chipman Pond — about 7 miles south of the shop.

Broad Creek is tidal through Laurel and the range is enough to leave a fixed dock high and awkward at low water, which is why floating docks are more common here than a few miles inland. Records Pond and Chipman Pond sit immediately above the town and behave nothing like the creek — still water, managed level, and banks that slump rather than scour.

Access. Creek access is good from the land side through most of Laurel, so a lot of work here goes in without a barge. We cover ZIP code 19956 and the surrounding Sussex County shoreline.

What that usually argues for. The fix has to be keyed in below the scour line, which is why toe protection matters more than freeboard here. Rip-rap, engineered bulkhead with proper embedment, or a graded living shoreline where there is room for one.

Questions we get about Laurel water

Should I build fixed or floating on Broad Creek?

It depends where on the creek. Closer to town the tidal range argues for a float; further up, where the water is shallower and the range smaller, a fixed pier is usually the better structure.

Is pond frontage in Laurel regulated the same way?

Still DNREC, but a non-tidal pond is a different review from tidal Broad Creek. We handle both.

Permits in Delaware

Shoreline work in Delaware is regulated, and almost anything built in or over the water needs approval from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. We handle that in house — preparing the plans, completing the applications and coordinating with the agencies.

Budget three to twelve months for agency review depending on the complexity of the project. It is the part of the schedule most people underestimate, so it is worth starting the conversation well before the season you want to be using the water.
