Shoreline Protection

Erosion Control

Offshore rip-rap sills that take wave energy out of the water before it reaches your shoreline.

“Every storm takes a little more of the shoreline.”

Most shoreline erosion starts with wave energy. An offshore rip-rap sill is positioned waterward of the shoreline, so waves meet stone before they meet your land — and arrive with less energy when they do.

How an offshore sill works

The sill provides wave attenuation, reducing the energy that reaches the shoreline behind it. That helps stabilize the sheltered shoreline, and the calmer water behind a sill can support vegetation — which is why sills are often part of living shoreline work.

Sill or revetment?

A rip-rap revetment armors the shoreline itself. A sill works out in the water, ahead of it. Which one suits your shoreline depends on exposure, water depth, the shoreline and the permits that apply — and sometimes the answer is both.

Built like the rest of our stone work

Sills are built with DelDOT-rated stone selected for the site’s conditions, using the same proven installation practices as our rip-rap revetments.
