Marine Construction in Salisbury, MD
The Wicomico is tidal and commercially navigable right into Salisbury, which makes it one of the few places on the Shore where working water and back yards share a bank. Ponds above town, river below it.
The water around Salisbury
Tidal river water: the Wicomico River, Johnson Pond and Schumaker Pond — about 22 miles southwest of the shop.
The Wicomico is tidal and commercially navigable right into Salisbury, so working water and residential frontage share the same river here. Commercial traffic means wake on a scale a back-bay lot never sees, and structures have to be built for it.
Access. Straight run down from Seaford, and one of our most-worked Maryland rivers. We cover ZIP codes 21801, 21804 and the surrounding Wicomico County shoreline.
What that usually argues for. The fix has to be keyed in below the scour line, which is why toe protection matters more than freeboard here. Rip-rap, engineered bulkhead with proper embedment, or a graded living shoreline where there is room for one.
Questions we get about Salisbury water
Does commercial traffic really affect my bank?
On the Wicomico, yes. A loaded barge displaces a great deal more water than a runabout, and the wave it makes is long and low — the kind that works a toe.
Who permits work on the Wicomico?
MDE, often with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers depending on scope. We handle both.
Permits in Maryland
Shoreline work in Maryland is regulated, and almost anything built in or over the water needs approval from the Maryland Department of the Environment, often alongside the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. We handle that in house — preparing the plans, completing the applications and coordinating with the agencies.
Budget three to twelve months for agency review depending on the complexity of the project. It is the part of the schedule most people underestimate, so it is worth starting the conversation well before the season you want to be using the water.
