Marine Construction in Dover AFB, DE
East of Dover, where the St. Jones opens into marsh and the land runs out into Delaware Bay. Wide, soft, low-lying ground — the kind of shoreline where a living shoreline usually makes more sense than a wall.
The water around Dover AFB
Tidal river water: the St. Jones River, Little Creek and tidal marsh — about 42 miles north of the shop.
East of the city the St. Jones opens into marsh and the land simply runs out into Delaware Bay. Ground here is low, soft and wet, and structures need to be designed for settlement as much as for wave energy.
Access. Base and marsh access both need planning ahead; nothing here is a drive-up job. We cover ZIP code 19902 and the surrounding Kent County shoreline.
What that usually argues for. The fix has to be keyed in below the scour line, which is why toe protection matters more than freeboard here. Rip-rap, engineered bulkhead with proper embedment, or a graded living shoreline where there is room for one.
Questions we get about Dover AFB water
Can anything be built on marsh edge?
Yes, but it has to be designed for the ground rather than dropped onto it. Pile length here is governed by refusal depth, and refusal can be a long way down.
Is a living shoreline the better option out here?
Frequently. Soft, low-energy marsh edge is exactly the setting these were developed for.
Permits in Delaware
Shoreline work in Delaware is regulated, and almost anything built in or over the water needs approval from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. We handle that in house — preparing the plans, completing the applications and coordinating with the agencies.
Budget three to twelve months for agency review depending on the complexity of the project. It is the part of the schedule most people underestimate, so it is worth starting the conversation well before the season you want to be using the water.
